The use of facebook in class

I have mixed feelings about the use of facebook or other social networks in class.  In good be a good tool or it could be misused.  I can see some benefits.  A class could have a facebook page or be part of a facebook group.  There could be assignments just done for facebook.  If a student misses class, he or she could find out what the assignments are because they are posted on the facebook sight.  Maybe even some classes could be totally on line and facebook could be part of it.  This, of course, can have its drawbacks.
Group projects could be partially or maybe totally done on Facebook.  If the group had trouble meeting maybe they could all get together at the same time on facebook and that could possibly work.  They could chat on line about the project they were working on and not neccessarily have to meet at a designated location.  There are many positive aspects to using facebook or other social networks.   There are also drawbacks.
Elementary, middle school, and high school sometimes have problems paying attention.  This could just add to the whole problem.  Instead of passing notes students could be posting stuff on facebook.  They could also be chatting with friends outside of school when they should be paying attention to the teacher.
Another drawback is that both the students and teachers have their own private lives.  Should teachers and students friend each other on facebook.  If a teacher friends a student should teacher have a facebook page just for his or her students?  I know that I would not want my perspective students to be friends with me on my facebook page.  Sometimes certain subjects are discussed on my facebook page that I may not want others reading, especially my perspective students. If I do friend my students I will have a page just for them. Also, my perspective students have a right to a private life away from their teachers.  Should the students have their own facebook pages just for their teachers to view?
Could a teacher somehow start being harrassed by a student that he or she doesn't get along with via facebook or the internet.  This could become a problem.  There definitely needs to be limits set when concerning the use of facebook or other social networks in a student and teacher relationship.

Reflection on the Future of Now

The four videos show that the internet age is very important.  For good or for ill the only way one can get ahead in the world is to have a basic knowledge of the internet and be able to use technology.  Therefore, teachers need to have a good understanding of technology so they teach their students.  I am not saying that if one is teaching an English class or a history class one always needs to be on line or using a powerpoint presnetation, though the latter is a good tool to use.  Students also need to have a good understanding of the internet and technology to get ahead.  I do have some reservations about all this technology even though I know it is important.
All four videos were very compelling in how they show how technology has grown in the last couple of decades.  Is this really helping students learn?  Sometimes yes and sometimes no.  The video done in the classroom indicates that students spend a lot of time on line, even in the classroom when they should be listening to a lecture.  This is when technology can be a drawback.  They also spend much time on it outside of the classroom.  Is that cutting into study time?  Yes, obviously, it sometimes is.  Yet, technology can be a great tool.  One can access a website that can be used for a class project or paper a student is writing.  There is good information online that students can use.
These videos shows that this society values information because of the internet.  I have a question: What do we do with all of this information?  Some of it is very useful for students and people in general.  Yet, to be honest, there is a lot of useless information on the internet.  Not too mention that some people can do really stupid stuff online.  We need to look at the internet as a tool.  One that can be used for really good purposes, it can be used for bad purposes, and it can be used for absolutely useless purposes.  Sometimes I think people use it more for useless things than for something good.  Now, I have to admit I'm the type of guy who likes to go on Youtube and watch videos.  Some of them are worthwhile and some of them aren't.
The four videos themselves were very compelling.  The way they showed how technology has advanced and where it is going to go is fascinating.  Much of this can be used as teaching tools.  One thing we need to remember that technology cannot be a substitute for good teaching.  God forbid, we were ever to be thrown back into the stone age (that's what I get for reading Cormac McCarthy's novel THE ROAD) one could still be a good teacher without all this technology.  Let technology be a tool and do not let it dictate you as a teacher.

Reflection 1: Essential Conditions

The conditions seem fair.  I had to read them over a few times because I found some of the techincal language a little intimidating.  Sometimes I love technology and other times I am intimidated by it. Right now, I am not in any school teaching yet nor student teaching.  Hopefully next semester.  Right now, I still need to pass CSET.  I have one more subtest to go.  I will be taking that this Saturday.  Obviously, when I am teaching I will be implenting this.  Possibly when I sub I can implement some of it.
The sections on ongoing professional learning and technical support seemed really important.  I need to learn more about technology.  I am even tonight.  I haven't blogged before, though I know people who have.  It would be good for me as a teacher.  One thing I really need to learn is powerpoint.  That is great for teaching but I have never done a powerpoint presentation.  Hopefully I can learn that here and also other aspects of technology that would make me be a better teacher.

1st day of class

Just started blogging.  Needed to for class.  My instructor seems to be a good guy.  Has a good sense of humor.
